Day Four Release: C3/DS Genetic Breed + Metaroom pack
on Wednesday
November 4th is yet another historic day for the Creatures series, perhaps one of the most important ones too, for 17 years ago today Steve Grand wrote “A Mouse For Windows“. For those of you who don’t know, this was one of the original ideas that helped form the game that would later become Creatures 1.
As you can see, although there are some vague similarities, this concept describes something quite different to the games that we all know and love. Clearly the ‘Little Computer Ewoks’ idea mentioned at the bottom of the article is the one that people went for in the end, and I’m sure that we’re all quite thankful for that, but I believe that this is still nonetheless an important and noteworthy date in Creatures history.
Fun historic facts aside, today I’ve got some great releases from Grendel Man for you all to enjoy.
First up we have the Skyswimmer Grendels. Rather than attempt to describe this brilliant genetic breed to you myself I’ll share an excerpt from the help file with you:
“The original skyswimmers were a C2 breed that used the sprites of the standard grendel and MerNorn, and flew with Don’s “Give Me Flight” COB.
This version for C3/DS follow the same concept – they look like aquatic creatures, but instead of swimming, they fly through the air, making use of their arms (and Wopsy’s Flyagent.cos/Dusty Aqua Flying Agent) to push themselves along. They won’t be able to fly until adolescence, when they cast off their legs and take to the air. Behaviorially, they are quite social and like to fly around in large groups. While lone skyswimmers are more or less likely to let your norns be, in groups they tend to get angry when norns are near.
In terms of diet, they are fond of critters and will spend a lot of their time chasing after birds, although it’s still nessecary for them to eat other foodstuffs such as seeds in order to be completely covered nutrition-wise.”
With the Skyswimmer Grendels are two agents to help you raise them – Balloon Pidgeons and Flower Fruit. Once again, here’s a small excerpt from the help file to let you know what these two unique agents are like:
“Balloon pigeons are fat, slow moving birds that stay afloat due to lighter than air gases inside their bodies. Left to their own devices, they’ll wander around, laying eggs when their population gets low. Oftentimes, however, they will get eaten by hungry skyswimmers or other creatures. You can adjust their minimum population with the Balloon Pigeon creator.
Flower fruits are just that – flowers that grow on the same tree the apples do in C3, or above the Empathic Vendor in DS. They do not fall off the tree, thus remaining out of reach of all but flying creatures. When they get too old, they wither and then fall to the ground.”
The Skyswimmer Grendels, Balloon Pidgeons and Flower Fruits are all available for download here.
As if that wasn’t enough though, Grendel Man also has a beta version of his Sky Sanctuary metaroom for us to enjoy. Once again, here’s a brief bit of information from the help file that is included with this release:
“The Sky Sanctuary is a fairly safe haven in the clouds where flying creatures can enjoy themselves. The metaroom is screen-sized, so it’s fairly small. This beta lacks agents apart from CA emitters, a weather system, doors, and lift buttons, but it’s usable and can be made inhabitable by placing outside agents into the metaroom.
This release works with DS and DS Docked, but not with C3 Standalone. The final release will work with C3 Standalone as well as DS standalone and DS docked.”
You can download the beta version of Grendel Man’s Sky Sanctuary here.
