Your first mistake is that you’re whining about not being able to draw $object.

This is a textbook case self-fulfilling prophecy.  It’s also the sort of ADD that concerned mothers are talking about when they bemoan Twitter and shit.  Actively stop yourself from doing this — tape a note to your screen if you have to — and go figure it out.

I don’t know how anyone else does it, but I usually find someone who does what I want — who has a technique unobfuscated enough that I can follow the steps — look at it for a while.

Then I get a photo ref (or, well, the closest applicable) and try to apply that technique, that renderer, to get the result.  Realism First And All, but that’s what the photo is for.  If I wanted perfect photorealism I’d take a photo.

I can usually clear up the problem within a few hours.
